Step 1 Read the scenario.
You are a school nurse in a rural setting. Walking down the halls of the middle school, you smell cigarette smoke coming from the boy’s restroom. You observe Nathan, a seventh grader, leaving the restroom. Approaching Nathan, you ask him if he was smoking. Nathan drops his head and avoids eye contact and states yes. You respond that you will contact his parents. He acknowledges with a nod of his head, and you arrange a meeting after school.
Nathan’s parents and Nathan meet with you after school. Nathan’s parents share that smoking is a family habit. Nathan’s family and you discuss the health issues associated with smoking. Nathan’s father voices that, as a family, they are willing to try a smoking cessation program. Nathan’s parents have smoked for 16 years, each two packs a day. Nathan is subjected to secondhand smoke at home and sneaks an occasional cigarette, approximately one every two days for the last three months.
