Step 1: Read the information about your class below or draft a profile of a current class you are teaching at the same age and level as the case provided.
The learners are a group of adult learners aged 18-20 enrolled on an English course to prepare them for university study. They need to attain a level of B1 to enter their chose courses. Their current level of written and spoken English is at the pre-intermediate level (A2). They all speak Vietnamese as their first language.
Although this is a high stakes context, they are not very motivated to study English. They are not English majors, but they must pass an English exam before they can start university. They prefer to learn f rom the teacher not f rom each other. They have exceptionally good knowledge of English grammar but have difficulty applying the grammar knowledge in practice. They get along well with their classmates and are very respectful towards their teachers. They are used to traditional teaching methods especially grammar translation and audiolingualism but are open to different approaches. They have the typical second language learning capacities and cognitive abilities of learners at this age and level.
Step 2: Your task: Choose a lesson framework suited to the context, age and level of these learners that will enhance motivation and/or agency. Design two detailed lesson plans and write a formal *rationale to justify your choice which includes a discussion of the key research related to the framework.
*A rationale is a justification for a lesson, course or assessment design or any other choices that you make as a teacher. Writing a rationale helps us to understand the reasoning behind our decision making and can expose weaknesses in our thinking and practice. For example, a rationale may discuss research, theories or other research evidence which underpins our decisions as well as explain the key information about the learners that were considered. A rationale combines reasoning with credible evidence.
Your assessment should include the following:
Lesson Plans (2 pages each): Using a suitable lesson framework, design two lessons for the group of learners. The lessons should be motivating and suited to the context, age and level of the learners and should provide opportunities for them to express and enact group and individual agency. The lesson design should align with the lesson framework and include a language focus element that is not grammar. Materials can be included in the appendices or integrated into the lesson plans. The lesson plans need to include, aims, stages, interaction, timings, and a detailed explanation of the key classroom procedures and learning activities including, but not limited to, teacher-directed questions, student learning outcomes and anticipated problems.
Rationale: Justify the framework (if applicable) (2000 words)
you do not need to write the lesson plans, just write the rationale. However the rationale is the foundation for me to write the lesson plans, please discuss with me.
