STandards:
5a: Understand content knowledge—the central concepts, methods and tools of inquiry, and structure—and resources for the academic disciplines in an early childhood curriculum.
5b: Understand pedagogical content knowledge— how young children learn in each discipline—and how to use the teacher knowledge and practices described in Standards 1 through 4 to support young children’s learning in each content area.
5c: Modify teaching practices by applying, expanding, integrating, and updating their content knowledge in the disciplines, their knowledge of curriculum content resources, and their pedagogical content knowledge.
**This standard is about your knowledge of specific academic disciplines. This is more than your knowledge of early childhood curriculum.  It is your deep, underlying understanding of the academic disciplines such as mathematics, science, literature, art, and physical education, to name a few.  In your portfolio, in the section you created called NAEYC Standard 5, you will write a narrative that shows you competence in each of the key elements. After you have finished writing in your portfolio, upload the link to the Week 7 Portfolio – NAEYC Standard Five drop box in LiveText.
Start by finding at least two (2), and no more than four (4), artifacts that demonstrate your competency in this standard.  Be sure that your artifacts (when taken together) address each of the key elements for this standard.
What are artifacts? Artifacts may be documents, videos, assignments or lessons you developed for courses you’ve already taken. You may refine these assignments based on subsequent experiences and/or feedback from others, but this is not required.  You may also create new lessons, videos, or documents that demonstrate your competencies in each of the three key elements for this standard.
For each artifact, provide the following, by creating a new section or heading for each artifact (don’t use the numbers in your actual submission).
Template:
Title of the Artifact – give it a name, or use the name of the assignment if using an assignment
Description of Artifact: What is it?  For what class was it developed? What was the purpose of the assignment or activity?
Key Element: What specific key element does this artifact address? Provide the key element letter and title.  (Example: 1a: Understand the developmental period of early childhood from birth through age 8 across physical, cognitive, social and emotional, and linguistic domains, including bilingual/multilingual development)
How does the artifact demonstrate your competence in this area? Describe, in detail, using examples and integrating the information from the description of the key element in the NAEYC Professional Preparation document, HOW this artifact shows your competence. How will the reader know that you are competent? You need to tell the reader, and assume that they won’t even look at the artifact.
Attach the artifact.
If an artifact shows your competence in more than one key element, be sure to repeat the headings under #3 and #4.  In other words, write about each key element separately and specifically.  Review the rubric to see how each key element is graded separately
