Instructions
Conduct a review of one of the three peer-reviewed journal articles that you uploaded into the discussion board last session. This will be a two-to-three page, APA-formatted paper that should follow the following format:
Steps to Writing a Journal Article Review
Step 1: Read the article (first do a quick scan to get the overview).
Read the article, making notes in the margin or underlining parts of the article that are critical to the topic/research. Note any questions that you might have as you read.
Step 2: Write a brief summary of the article.
Summarize the main points of the article. Put the article down and ask yourself: What is this article/research about?
Step 3: Write out your major criticisms/strengths of the article.
Here are some questions to guide your critique. Not all will apply depending on the kind of article you are reviewing (research or theoretical):
Is the article well-organized?
Does the article contain all of the components you would expect (Introduction, Methods, Theory, Analysis, etc.)?
Are the sections well-developed?
Does the author do a good job of synthesizing the literature?
Does the author answer the questions he/she set out to answer?
Is the methodology clearly explained?
Does the theory connect to the data?
Is the article well-written and easy to understand?
Are you convinced by the author’s results or conclusions? Why or why not?
Step 4: Analyze the article in terms of its clinical value/application.
If your article was not a research article, then most of your content will focus on this section as opposed to many of the questions in Step 3.
Step 5: Review.
Proofread your review (the best way to do this is to read your paper aloud, you may also want to submit your paper to Brainfuse, CCU’s online writing lab.
Were your critiques/strengths adequately supported?
