Social workers use research based in social work practice and peer-reviewed evidence to inform decisions related to clients and the programs that serve them. Program changes can affect multiple stakeholders, so it is important for social workers to investigate evidence-based practices that support improvements and communicate their findings to decision-makers.
Continue your selected scenario from the Wk 2 Summative Assessment: Research Investigation Annotated Bibliography. Imagine you are a social worker at the same agency that serves the same specific population. The leaders of a local social program that serves the population are considering making program changes. They will be hosting an upcoming meeting to hear ideas from partner organizations, so your agency has asked you to give a presentation on behalf of the agency. Your role is to persuade program leaders of the evidence-based practices that will support positive changes in the program.
So far, you have researched evidence-based practices to support a specific population through a local social program. For this assessment, you will articulate the ideas from the Wk 4: Research Study Report and compile your final presentation on the evidence-based practices that programs and social workers should use with the selected population. Use the same example of the social program for the selected population and issue that you have researched throughout the course. While you are not required to give your presentation to the leaders of the social program you selected, it should be compiled in a way that it would be ready to show to them if you choose to do so, or to be included in a career portfolio to showcase your research and communication skills to agency leaders.
Assessment Deliverable
Create a 12- to 18-slide presentation that informs your selected audience about the findings from the research you have been compiling throughout the course. Persuade program leaders to make changes based on evidence-based practices as if you were a social worker for an agency that supports the selected program changes.
In your presentation, describe the key information from your findings in the following order, supported by evidence from your research:
Describe the selected social program and summarize the issue it is facing. Summarize gaps in social workers’ current understanding of the issue and explain why changes are needed.
Summarize the research questions or hypotheses investigated in the 3 selected peer-reviewed studies and the variables measured.
Describe the research designs used in the selected studies. Describe the strengths and weaknesses of these research designs, including commentary on their validity.
Describe the research sampling and data analysis methods used in the selected studies. Describe the strengths and weaknesses of these research sampling and data analysis methods, including commentary on their statistical significance. Evaluate these methods for accuracy and appropriateness with the selected population and issue.
Summarize your findings from the results of the selected studies. Explain how the results of these studies apply to social work practice with the selected population, social program, and issue.
Propose program changes supported by your findings. Conclude your presentation with a call to leaders to take a specific action toward making the program changes that you proposed.
