Assignment # 2: Race, Class, and Gender in The Bluest Eye
Human experience is shaped by multiple social positions, such as race, class, and gender. Using an intersectionality framework, explain how race, class, and gender shape the experiences of THREE characters in the book The Bluest Eye.
Introduction: Write a brief introduction in which you tell the reader about the importance of intersectionality to the formation of identities in The Bluest Eye and introduce the three characters you are going to describe. Add something interesting for the reader from the novel, such as a peculiarity you noted.
Write three paragraphs on each of the characters. Use examples from the novel. Use at least two direct quotes from the novel to illustrate your point.
Conclude the essay by noting the interesting similarities and differences among your characters. Finally, add some parting words of wisdom or a “take-home lesson” for your reader.
The assignment should be around 1000 words long, A4 size pages – typed and double-spaced. I expect all students to abide by the highest standards of academic integrity and honesty and assume that all submitted work is done by the student independently.
