so my group is working on a project for our class, my portion is focused on the Value Chain Analysis in the Internal Analysis, our company is Starbucks. Here is the outline for the value chain analysis you need to complete and follow for Starbucks:
– “Value Chain Analysis. Provide an analysis of the value chain activities of the company and the company’s resources and capabilities that are employed. Also identify Critical Resources, Capabilities, and Mechanisms, i.e. provide an analysis of the critical human, tangible, and intangible resources, the critical capabilities that are derived from them, and what mechanisms enable deriving these capabilities from them. Also, include an evaluation the degree to which each is rare and valuable, and thus each critical capability’s ability to provide a competitive advantage, its ability to be sustainable, and an assessment of its likelihood of being appropriated by existing or future competitors.”
only focus on the value chain analysis outline I gave you above. that is the format for the only section for my part.
I uploaded an example for my portion my professor shared with the class on a different company. It needs to be this length and look like that. Make sure to use correct citations, and that will show in introduction to the following resources.

• Net Advantage from Standard & Poor (1999-) This link opens in a new window

and here are some tips to help given by the professor to help complete this portion, these are only tips:
You need to be sure to clearly define the industry you are analyzing and justify that based on why it is relevant to the company you are ultimately going to analyze and make recommendations to.
Be sure your focus for this analysis is on the industry and not just the company you are analyzing. It’s okay to say how the aspects of the industry you are exploring are relevant to the company, but the primary focus must be the industry. For example, the overview, 5 forces, critical success factors, and trends analysis should be for the industry, not just the company.
Critical success factors should be central to the nature of what industry the company competes. For example, if it is retail, then convenient location and revenue based on same-store sales are critical to success. See my examples for the grocery and steel industries in the slides.
Lastly, be sure to utilize the resources I pointed you to that are available from the library, which are IBIS and S&P Industry Surveys. These sources will provide you with a great deal of insights into the industry (for your overview, 5 forces, critical success factors, and trends).
Remember that this is an Industry Analysis. Many focused too much on their company.
Be sure to utilize the IBIS and S&P Industry Surveys. They have already done a great deal of the research for you, in many cases, you may just need to report on it in your own words. NOTE: BE SURE TO CITE YOUR SOURCES
Be sure to define the industry. If you go with the way IBIS or S&P Industry Surveys defines it that may be fine, but sometimes it might be too broad. Choose carefully. You should also consider the idea of substitutability as I discussed in the lecture on industry analysis using US airlines.
Then be sure to be consistent in analyzing the industry as defined when writing the appendices on Industry Overview, Industry Structure (5 forces), Industry Groups, and Industry Trends. NOTE THAT IBIS and S&P Industry Surveys WILL TYPICALLY COVER ALL THESE TOPICS.
As you write up the appendices be detailed and specific in supporting you statements and conclusions. NOTE THAT CITATIONS HELP IN PROVIDING SUPPORT AND EVIDENCE.
For the Industry Structure (5 forces) look to the slides I used in the lecture that itemizes the various components for each of the forces. This will help you to identify specifics. Ultimately this framework is to help identify the profitability and attractiveness of an industry.
When examining Critical Success Factors you should do so for the industry, then when you develop the Industry Groups, you should try to reassess CSFs for your company’s group.
In developing the Industry Groups plot the competitors on the XY grid and see how they cluster. That will tell you the groups. The intent is to identify which compete with similar strategies.
Remember that the Industry Trends are for the industry, not just for your organization.
Ask yourselves, is the industry appropriately defined, is there enough detail, are statements appropriately cited, does the submission read as one cohesive report?
so my group is working on a project for our class, my portion is focused on the
