Skills Being Assessed
In this assignment, you
will practice the following skill:
Problem-Solving
The ability to identify
and frame problems, explore ideas, and create effective, ethical, and
evidence-based solutions.
Overview
It
is important to use your Problem-Solving skills to identify
and frame problems as you define the makeup of the students. This step is
needed before you can evaluate students’ performance. Teachers should determine
if students are facing problems in their community, so effective assessments
can be created appropriately. The development of good assessment techniques
takes into consideration the current knowledge of students about a topic, the
skills they have learned from previous instruction or courses, and the expected
competency they currently possess based on their current educational level in
class.
For
this assignment, you will complete the preliminary work needed to develop an
assessment plan by defining the student population and exploring assessment
techniques that could be used for the plan.
Scenario
For this assignment,
imagine that you are starting a teaching job and you have been asked to prepare
an assessment plan for a specific grade or educational level of your choice.
You need to develop an assessment plan that focuses on a specific subject area.
This assessment plan will be based on a seven (7)-week grading period.
Preparation
Review the five guiding
principles listed in the “Guidelines for Selecting and Using Classroom
Assessments” section on page two (2) of your textbook. You will use these
principles as you define your student population and develop the various
sections of the plan. Once you have developed the plan, you will then also
choose three (3) assessment techniques or methods to explain their relevance to
your class.
THE five guidelines’ principles are:
·
It is clear about the objective you want to assess.
·
Make sure the assessment you have chosen matches with your
learning goal.
·
Be sure to select the assessment techniques that serve the needs
of the learners.
·
Whenever possible be sure to use multiple indications of
performance for each learning objective.
·
Be sure to interpret or help the students to interpret the
results of the assessment they have taken.
Instructions
Complete the preliminary
work for an assessment plan by writing a three-to-four (3-4) page report in
which you:
1.      Describe
the school and the student population. The description must include the
following demographic information and learning goals:
o    Description
of the school, geographical location, population, diversity profile, etc. of
the students that you would like to evaluate.
o    Identification
of topics and subject areas that students currently know, specifying if they
have specific skills, and how they perform academically in the classroom.
o    List
the learning goals that you would like your students to achieve.
o    List
the state standards and local curriculum goals for your students.
2.      Choose
three (3) assessment techniques that align with the identified learning goals
for a specific subject area. Your selected techniques must include the
following:
o    Explanation
of how these assessment techniques can provide students with an opportunity for
improvement.
o    Discussion
of how teachers can provide feedback to students by using these assessment
techniques.
o    Alignment
of each assessment technique with specific learning goals.
3.      Explain
how using multiple assessment techniques could gauge what your students have
learned.
o    Describe
the pros and cons of using one assessment versus three to four (3-4) assessment
techniques for each learning objective.
4.      Explain
how assessments can accurately determine the applicability of real-life success
for your students.
5.      Use two to
three (2-3) sources to support your writing. Choose sources that are credible,
relevant, and appropriate. Cite each source listed on your source page at least
one time within your assignment.
