April 6, 2024

Since you are going over three major moral theories this week and we’ve missed out on 2 days worth of class time, this discussion is a space for you to ask questions about the material and help each other in answering. I will also add replies to ensure everyone understands the material. The posting requirements (including word counts) are a little different this week because of this.
First post: one question about the material. It can be from the general concepts lecture posted in week 1 or the any of the content for week 2. There is no required word count. Please make sure another student has not already asked your question prior to posting it.
Second posts: reply to three of your peers questions. These must hit 100 minimum.
Reminder: Be sure to include the word counts in your post.
Replies to posts:
Post 1: “In the videos, they talk about how few people are able to live fully ethical lives and they should be praised for that but my question is what do you think makes it so hard to live an ethical life? (because it’s cleary hard if not everyone is able to do it even if they want to)”
Post 2: “According to Kant’s idea of Deontology, a significant challenge would be that it ignores actual outcomes and is strictly a rule-based ethical theory. That being said, this would pay no attention to the situation, as moral laws are “absolute, universal, and impartial” (Immanuel Kant & Medicine lecture).  Although, when must the line be drawn and who decides what is right or wrong? Furthermore, how is “duty” the determining factor for acting out of duty to the moral law, as a maxim is a rule that connects an action to the reasons for that action?”
Post 3: “Considering that healthcare professionals also require self-care to effectively promote patients’ best interests, does the utilitarian principle present a dilemma when professionals prioritize their own emotional comfort, arguing that it directly impacts their ability to provide optimal patient care (General items & Aristotle PPT, pg. 8)?”
