Self Reflection Paper
General Instructions (20 points)
A major aspect of cultural competence is developing critical self-reflection skills. Critical self-reflection is a culturally competent practice that positions practitioners with the ability to recognize and respond to the influence of power, privilege, and oppression within client interactions. The purpose of the assignment is to assess the student’s willingness and the ability for self-reflection about cultural competence.  More specifically, the paper is designed to evaluate how the student considers their impact on their environment (internally and externally) and how their attributes may serve those impacted by cultural competence.  Students should critically reflect by exploring how they were personally impacted by issues of power, privilege, and oppression. Upon consideration of the person-in-environment perspective (PIE), the student is to demonstrate how they can identify 1-their strengths, 2- select personal domains they would like to enhance, and 3-conceptualize implications of their behavior upon clients from different cultural backgrounds.
Detailed Instructions
Several instruments for evaluating an individual’s cultural competence have been developed and are available online. One assessment tool that has been widely circulated is Goode’s Self Assessment Checklist for Personnel Providing Services and Supports to Children
https://www.asha.org/siteassets/uploadedfiles/multicultural/self-reflection-checklist.pdf
First, complete the checklist and then self-reflect on the results in a written format. This assignment will be submitted in one document in the form of an integrative paper.  The paper should be 3-5 pages and in APA format. The title page and references do not count towards the length.  Please submit this review as a Word document through Canvas.
1. Introduction
The introduction will, in one to two paragraphs, describe the content/structure of the paper to the reader in a concise manner.  It will include a thesis statement (ex. The purpose of this paper is to…).
2.  Cognitive and Emotional Self-Reflection
Explain your thoughts about areas you need to improve. What do you think you can do to strengthen your cultural competencies?
Think about the areas that you need to improve and explain your feelings (e.g., anger, sadness, anxiety, fear, confusion). Choose 1 feeling and describe the reason that you believe that you have these feelings. Are you comfortable with these feelings, or would you like to change them?
3. Personal Insight
How tolerant are you of others’ behavior (never, sometimes, often, always)? What does a personal boundary mean to you?  How do you usually respond when others “do not understand you and your culture”? Explain how you learned this level of tolerance. Are you comfortable with your behaviors, or would you like to change them? If you would like to change any of your behaviors, what behaviors would you like to change? What do you believe is the best method for you to change your behavior? In general, do you experience that other people are often unpleased/pleased with your behavior?  What do you think about that?
4. Discussion & Recommendations:
Specifically, describe what you have learned about your response to the self-reflection-checklist.pdf
Actions
and from this analysis.  Include 2-3 specific things that you have learned.  Has your opinion changed since the beginning of this class?  Explain how this new information can be used to enhance working with culturally diverse populations. For example, What is most important for practitioners to know? What is most important for practitioners to do?
