Topic that was given for discussion:Recently in the news, we hear more and more about mental illness either with the news talking about guns or healthcare with insurance coverage. Many people may have various symptoms but go untreated. There are many options for treating mental illness. For this week’s discussion question, select a mental disorder and discuss 2-3 options you would expect a patient’s treatment to include and explain your choices in detail.
PART 1
ADD/ADHD
Attention-deficit disorder (ADD) or attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is known as an autism spectrum disorder and is one of the most common mental disorders affecting children. ADD/ADHD also affects many adults. Symptoms of ADHD include inattention (not being able to keep focus), hyperactivity (excess movement that is not fitting to the setting), and impulsivity (hasty acts that occur at the moment without thought) (American Psychiatric Association, 2012). The disorder often causes problems at work, in relationships, in school, and at home. A person suffering from the disorder finds it difficult to pay attention, even when they try to concentrate. They find it hard to get organized, control their behavior, remember details, or listen to instructions. The disorder is also more common among males than females (Moini, 2018). The history behind the name regarding both names concerning the disorder is that ADD is an older term. However, the word hyperactivity was added to the name in 1987. Before ADHD was added a child would be diagnosed with ADD, either with or without hyperactivity in 1980 (Anderson, 2021).
Treatment
One of the most used treatments for ADD / ADHD is Stimulant therapy. Stimulants are agents that enthuse any bodily function, but more specifically those that stimulate the brain and central nervous system. The drugs induce alertness, elevated mood, wakefulness, increased speech, and motor activity, and decrease appetite (Britannica, 2019). Stimulants are an effective way of managing ADHD symptoms such as short attention span, impulsive behavior, and hyperactivity. These drugs improve ADHD symptoms in about 70% of adults and 70% to 80% of children shortly after starting treatment. Improvements include reduced interrupting, fidgeting, and other hyperactive symptoms, as well as improved task completion and home relationships. There is a list of short-acting (immediate-release), intermediate-acting, and long-acting forms of stimulants that help with improvement. However, improvement only continues as long as the medication is being taken (Cleveland Clinic, 2021). Another treatment to consider is a behavioral therapy that can also be combined with stimulants. While medication works on a neurological level to regulate the brain, behavioral therapy addresses specific problem behaviors by structuring time at home, establishing predictability and routines, and increasing positive attention (Sprinkle, 2021). The focus of behavioral therapy is to replace negative behaviors with positive ones. By teaching strategies to improve the problem areas like organization, focus, and impulse control. However, some people find that behavioral therapy helps them to effectively manage their ADHD symptoms without medication (Behring, 2021).

PART 2
The disorder I chose was depression. Depression is one of the most prevalent mental health disorders in the world. Acourding to the depression and bipolar support alliance, “Major depressive disorder affects approximately 17.3 million American adults, or about 7.1% of the U.S. population age 18 and older, in a given year. Major depressive disorder is more prevalent in women than in men. 1.9 million children, 3 – 17, have diagnosed depression. Adults with a depressive disorder or symptoms have a 64 percent greater risk of developing coronary artery disease.” The first treatment option I would try is traditional therapy. A lot of the time depression is caused by unresolved trauma and relationship issues and therapy can help someone start to work on these issues. The next treatment I would try is diet and exercise, several studies have shown that exercise is as effective as medication for some people suffering from depression. Nutrition also plays a huge role in building and regulating neurotransmitters related to depression like dopamine and serotonin. The final treatment for depression I would try with my patient would be medication. I would use this as a last resort because medication often loses effectiveness overtime and can have a lot of negative side effects.
