NURSING INTERVENTION GUIDELINES, FOLLOW THIS
NURSING INTERVENTIONS ARE NURSING ORDERS USED TO DIRECT THE PATIENT CARE AND ARE USED BY ALL STAFF
Types of Nursing Interventions
Nurses perform interventions in a variety of ways for the well-being of their patients. Some treatments might be undertaken alone, while other activities require a doctor’s instruction. A single nurse may work with a patient from beginning to end, or patient care might be a team effort.
You might be expected to perform These three types of nursing interventions as a registered nurse.
Independent Nursing Interventions
Nurses are health care professionals who can act independently when it’s allowed. So, an independent nursing intervention is an action a nurse can perform by themselves, without any management from a doctor or another discipline.
Basic comfort care or taking a patient’s temperature are examples of independent nursing tasks.
Dependent Nursing Interventions
Some interventions require a doctor’s order or directions from other health care professionals before a nurse can perform them. These nursing actions are known as dependent or physician-initiated nursing interventions.
For example, a nurse can’t administer medication or perform a vaccination without the direction of a doctor.
HOW TO WRITE NURSING INTERVENTIONS:
1. Identify who will be doing the intervention (nurse, assistant, dietary aide etc.)
2. Explain EXACTLY what they will do AND how often
3. REMEMBER: ONLY a nurse can ASSESS, ONLY a nurse can TEACH
4. For teaching it MUST be step by step
5. For administering medications or treatments it MUST be step by step or FULLY explained
6. For assessment: What EXACTLY will the nurse assess AND how often
7. For a referral to a wound care nurse, dietician, etc. must be specific as to WHY the referral is being made
8. For ‘Calling/Notifying Provider’ MUST be specific as to WHY the notification is being made and WHEN it will be made
