Search and rescue missions are a common type of response scenario in which UAS are utilized. Oftentimes, UAS response teams will partner with local law enforcement agencies to assist them in these operations. In order to conduct these missions successfully, UAS teams need certain information and planning practices, as discussed in the course materials this week.
Your assignment is to write a response to the following scenario as if you are the leader of a UAS response team. Your team consists of yourself and three others for a total of four individuals on your team. The area of search is assumed to be a lake north of Tallahassee.
Note: In emergency management, the words ‘EXERCISE EXERCISE EXERCISE’ are used to distinguish between hypothetical or mission scenarios versus current realized events.
***EXERCISE EXERCISE EXERCISE*** You have been tasked to respond to a search for a missing boater. The boater is assumed to have been missing for the past 12 hours. Upon arrival to the area of operations, you and your team should plan and be prepared to operate for the next eight hours. Keep in mind that you and your team should consider any needs for both operational and/or personal gear. You receive the call from a local law enforcement agency. ***EXERCISE EXERCISE EXERCISE***
At minimum, your response should answer the following questions: (1) What questions do you ask before your team begins the response? (2) What equipment do you bring (personal and mission-related)? (3) What do you need to know before you make decisions, if anything at all? (4) How would your team utilize mission planning strategies to respond to this event?
Do not make any assumptions about material support or other equipment being provided to you. You should make a plan that ensures that your team is self-sustainable.
