Rule of Three Single Paragraph
For the Analytical Writing Exercise, you will be writing a single paragraph simlar to a paragraph of the body of a longer essay. Think of a longer essay as a series of rule of three single paragraphs with an overarching thesis statement.
When writing a single paragraph or paragraph of the body, the rule of three thesis statement is the FIRST sentence of the paragraph and clearly lists the three points to be further developed (x,y,z) and follows the rules laid out above.
Rule of Three is the basis of good historical writing and good analytical writing. Once you master this skill you will be able to expand into other styles that build upon Rof3.
1. SEGREGATION This is a graded “Delving Deeper” activity. Follow the directions to answer the questions and then upload your .docx file (only file type allowed).
You must use evidence from the Into the Fire documentary AND the Chinese Exclusion Act documentary in your response.
In ONE short rule of three paragraph, discuss the thread question of Who gets to be an American? in relation to segregation and exclusion – some evidence must be from Delving Deeper elements, especially the documentaries (you may also choose to use some evidence from the textbook). You must use course citation style footnotes for each piece of evidence – a reminder that a footnote requires a specific location (time in a video, page, etc. if a longer material).
If you need help finding the documentaries The Chinese Exclusion ActLinks to an external site is part of the PBS American Experience series and “Into the Fire: 1861-1896”  is the third episode in the African Americans: Many Rivers To Cross documentary series

Political Cartoon of TR’s “Big Stick in the Caribbean”
This is a political cartoon from 1904 representing Teddy Roosevelt’s corrolary to the Monroe doctrine. He said, “walk softly but carry a big stick.” Here is TR softly walking through the Caribbean (as evidenced by his being barefoot wading through the water) carrying his big stick and pulling his modern fleet (the US Navy is the big stick in reality) behind him. The ships have text reading debt collection, the sheriff, and tax receiver. Above fly American eagles. The territories mentioned around the sea are Santo Domingo, Cuba, Mexico, Panama, and Venezuela – all but Mexico have fallen under American informal empire and have seen visits of American gunboat diplomacy. The US will intervene in the Mexican Revolution a decade later.
