You may choose 1 option from the 2 paper options listed below. Both provide you with a grading rubric.
Please read through the research project descriptions very carefully and make sure that you address ALL the points detailed under each option. I want to read a thoughtful and reflective paper, folks, so take some time to analyze how your project relates to the topics covered in this class. Be creative, too, when appropriate. Bottom line is that I have read LOTS of these final papers from other students, so give me something surprisingly new that will make me think or gain a new perspective.
Here are some basic Q & A:
1. How many pages? Page requirement is 8 -10 pages. If you go over by a page, there is no penalty.
2. What is not included in the 8-10 page requirement?
a) The title page
b) The reference page
c) The appendix for the consent forms
d) The appendix for the interview questions
3. How many concepts do I need to use? You should have 10 or more.
4. Can I use other writing styles? Nope. Just APA
5. Where do I find information on APA? https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/general_format.html
6. Will my paper have an abstract? NO!
Select 1 of the 2 options
1. Write your life story.
(a) 15 pts. = Provide a detailed description of yourself and your relationship with all members of your family. Be sure to include all relevant background information that would be important for an outside reader to be aware of. Also include detailed information about the living arrangements of the family members (i.e., who, where, when, how long, any problems?).
(b) 10 pts. = Briefly summarize the topics you will address in the paper about your life growing up in your family. (i.e., family of origin, parenting styles, love styles, family rules, etc)
(c) 35 pts. = Use the topics you listed in section (b) as headings and write in detail how you compare to the information presented in your textbook. Be sure to bold all terms in your paper. Be sure to demonstrate you understand the terms you are using (this would include paraphrasing, quoting, and applying). Remember that paraphrasing and quoting will require intext citations.
(d) 30 pts. = First, analyze how you feel about the way you were raised. Discuss each topic covered. Second, how has reflecting on your life and writing about it changed your thoughts regarding the topics and your understanding of your relationships (with family members, intimate partners, and friends)? Third, based on your new knowledge from this class, how would you change your behavior and interactions in your relationships? You might even address how you might use this information to raise your future child. For example: what would stay the same and why? What would be different and why? Based on what facts from the book?
(e) 10 pts. = Overall grammar, punctuation, and paper organization.
Reminder: All terms must be bolded in your paper.
2. Marriage Interviews: Happily Ever After…
You will select two married people, from two separate relationships (i.e., not 2 people from the same couple), who have been married different lengths of time (i.e., one newly married and another that has been married for a significant number of years). Your interview would focus on the “ingredients” (behaviors, characteristics, attributes) that each married individual believes to be important in maintaining a marriage. In your discussion of the interviews, you will be expected to compare/contrast how each of the two couples have described which factors help to sustain a happy marriage.
You are expected to create an interview protocol outlining questions that will be discussed during the interviews. It is wise to make sure your interview questions focus on concepts as you will need to use concepts in your paper. It is helpful for your own personal recall to record your interviews. Otherwise you need to take very detailed notes. Each interview should take about 30-45 minutes. Use questions that require more than a “yes/no” response. Use prompts to get more details: “Could you give me an example of that?” or “Can you elaborate?”.
Your final paper will include the following:
(a) 15 pts. = Provide a detailed description of the participants and their relationship. Be sure to include all relevant background information that would be important for an outside reader to know to understand the participant’s background. Also include detailed information about the interview setting (i.e., who, where, when, how long, any problems?).
(b) 10 pts. = Briefly summarize the topics discussed during the interview. Also, make sure to include a copy of the interview protocol (i.e., a list of your interview questions!) in the appendix of your paper.
(c) 30 pts. = Compare and contrast the two interview conversations: What ideas were similar/different between the two interviewees? Make sure to use terms from the book (define the term and use the interview to provide an example of the term. Please bold and italicize all the terms. Be sure to demonstrate you understand the terms you are using (this would include paraphrasing, quoting, and applying). Remember that paraphrasing and quoting will require intext citations.
(d) 30 pts. = First, analyze how the interview data was related to class material and concepts pertaining to the topic. For example: Did the data support concepts/trends discussed in class? Did the data extend or contrast with ideas presented in your textbook? Second, how has the interview changed your thoughts regarding the topic? If it hasn’t changed your thoughts, how has it reinforced what you already believed? Third, what related information would you investigate further in future interviews (e.g., what other topics would you discuss and what questions would you ask), and with whom would you be interested in conducting additional interviews. Also, for this third part, be sure to explain why your proposed research would be of particular interest to others.
(e) 10 pts. = Overall grammar, punctuation and paper organization.
(f) 5 pts. = A copy of two CONSENT FORMS, one signed by each of your interviewees, indicating their voluntary consent to participate in the interview study. You will find the consent form protocol as a link at the top of your Canvas course page. Please print out two copies, obtain interviewees’ signatures. Scan the signed consent forms and include them in your appendix. You will only be able to upload one docX file. Make sure everything you need to submit is in 1 file!
Reminder: All terms must be bolded in your paper.
