My taste in art is a simple art piece, like black and white or just a couple colors on a frame, nothing with too much color or too much figures but all art is different depending on how we view or feel it. Art can come from a piece of paper to a building. Art contains feelings and emotions. Just like in the reading on page 5, “Art is the other side of our experience in the world.” which is why everyone views art differently based on their own ideas or point of views. The qualities in good art that I believe are texture, perspective, lighting, patience as well as how the art piece expresses its ideas and feelings. Dark lighting in a piece of art does not necessarily mean negativity, it can show feelings of a positive perspective depending on what the artist is portraying. I believe my taste in art is based on culture because it contains value and history of how society grew and it’s interesting to learn about the past, present and future based on cultures ideas and/or experiences especially when trying to understand how life was in the past from different types of people, era and communities.
In art, I really enjoy seeing sculptures, preferably large ones; I love admiring the details and thinking about how someone can mold and sculpt such great things on a larger scale. Another thing I like in art are paintings, mainly when they show small towns, people, rivers and houses.
Something that I found extremely interesting in the video (Art Must Be Beautiful, n.d.) was when the host talked about David Hume; it was a quote with which I immediately connected with my thoughts: “Every mind perceives a different beauty. One person may even perceive deformity while another is sensitive to beauty.” (Art Must Be Beautiful, n.d.):
The small details and the artist’s creativity are what I believe makes a good work of art; what people find beautiful or attractive depends on their own style and preferences.
It is my honest belief that European values, culture, and/or beauty standards do not influence my artistic preferences; I was born and raised in Mexico and lived and studied there until I was 13 years old, so my first exposure to art was Mexican crafts, sculptures, and paintings. The majority of European art in Mexico is found in churches, but indigenous crafts are predominant. As a result, I don’t feel my taste is influenced by European beauty standards.
