When thinking about the internet, no one knows how it happened or who invented it. All we know is we have it and it has impacted our lives in a variety of ways. In today’s world, people have immediate access to the internet at the touch of their hand from their smartphone. So many industries have been impacted by the internet both positively and negatively. An industry that has seen a growth in opportunity is the marketing industry, and specifically digital marketing. According to History Cooperative, “marketing is known as an advanced blend of strategy and technology”. (Hardy, 2021)
Before the internet, companies would depend on print advertisement, posters, magazines, billboards, the radio and television, and telemarketing. These are all important elements of marketing that companies should still use to promote their business, but promoting their company on the world wide web has become much more important. In 1995, “companies began the process of working to promote a business by getting search engines to send traffic to a website”, which then inspired the use of blogging and pay-per-click surfacing in the early 2000’s. (Square, n.d.)
Working in a digital marketing agency that focuses on search engine marketing and social media marketing, I have seen first-hand the importance of the internet, and especially with the impacts of COVID-19. Many companies have had to depend on digital marketing strategies to engage with customers and still generate business, whereas before they would depend on visiting prospective customers and meeting in-person. The internet has shown companies the importance of building on their marketing strategy and using the internet to their advantage. Consumers now expect and require a company to have a website and prefer to reach out to a company from this method versus meeting in-person. Although traditional marketing efforts are still important to promote a brand, digital marketing has emerged as the leader, and far more elite, or marketing due to the importance of the internet in everyday life for consumers.
