One goal from the HealthyPeople 2030 is to reduce illness, disability and death related to tobacco use and secondhand smoke (HealthyPeople2030, 2022). Healthy People 2030 aims to discourage people from using tobacco products and assist them in stopping. In the United States, well over 16 million adults have a disease related to smoking cigarettes, and smoking-related ailments kill half a million people each year (HealthyPeople2030, 2022). Smoking is a problem that is more common in men, lower incomes and lower educational levels. Smoking is a risk factor to practically every organ in the body and has a negative impact on one’s overall health. Smoking harms your airways and the small air sacs (alveoli) in your lungs, that can lead to respiratory disease. Men’s sperm can be damaged by smoking, which can impair fertility and enhance the chance of birth abnormalities and miscarriage. Smoking-related blockages can restrict blood flow to your legs and skin. Smoking harms blood arteries, causing them to thicken and narrow. Your heart will beat faster, and your blood pressure will rise as a result of this. Clots can occur as we

Adults aged 50 to 80 years old with a 20 pack-year smoking history who currently smoke or have quit within the last 15 years should have their lung cancer evaluated yearly with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT), per the USPSTF (USPSTF, 2021). The USPSTF recommends that providers inquire about tobacco use in all adult patients and encourage them to quit, as well as offering behavioral interventions and FDA-approved nicotine cessation medicines to non-pregnant smokers (USPSTF, 2021). It is also strongly suggested that pregnant women be assessed for their smoking habits and encourage to quit. As the primary provider, it is important that we ask questions such as how long the person has been smoking and how much they smoke also. Thin information also aids in how much damage has been done to the lungs. The combination of pharmacotherapy and behavioral support, all 7 US Food and Drug Administration–approved medications, and a variety of behavioral interventions were statistically significantly related to an increase in smokers’ relative likelihood to quit smoking at 6 or more months in the general adult population, according to systematic reviews, as compared to smokers receiving usual care or a minimal stop-smoking intervention (USPSTF, 2021).

Healthy People 2030 main focuses are on screening, prevention, and treatment of all types of diseases and disorders. Diseases and disorders that we see worldwide include heart disease and stroke, obesity, diabetes, chronic pain, cancers and blood disorder, renal diseases, and respiratory diseases (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2022). Many of these diseases modifiable risk factors that often can be educated and recommended by providers. For an example, patient with hypertension should be educated on the importance of eating healthy, exercising, and lower stress level as they can lead to complications if not treated. Many people are unaware they even have diabetes, and when left untreated, patients are at higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease. With health promotion and wellness, they are more likely to take actions to help manage their condition. We must provide information on modifying their diet as well as performing physical exercise. Lack of exercise will not only cause cardiovascular disease, but other problems can also arise, such as weight gain and diabetes.

Diabetes is another disease that we will encounter endlessly. It is estimated that 29.1 million people in the US has diabetes mellitus which is the 7th leading cause of death in the US (Healthy People, 2020). Of those 29.1 million people, approximately 90-95% have type 2 diabetes. High risk race includes African American, Hispanics, Native Americans, and Asians. Healthy People 2030 aim to reduce the burden of diabetes mellitus. The goal is to improve the quality of life for those who have this condition and those who are at risk. By doing so, we must focus on applying recent discoveries on the individual along with benefits of improved diabetes management and prevention by bringing discoveries that is life-saving into practice (Healthy People, 2020). It has been proven that modifiable risk factors such as lifestyle changes and better eating habits have been proven effectiveness in preventing the onset of type 2 Diabetes.
