Emmett (2005) states the 5-S discipline offers a systematic approach to improving work in various environments, including factories, warehouses, and offices. The 5-S steps are sort, set in order, shine, standardized, and sustain (Emmett, 2005). The 5-S method increases productivity while minimizing waste by supporting an orderly workspace and using visual signals to achieve consistent operational outcomes (Lean Thinking and Methods – 5S | US EPA, 2023).
When properly utilized, the 5-S approach can dramatically improve organization, efficiency, and productivity in a tiny workplace like my desktop. Sorting desktop clutter at first took a lot of work due to numerous items such as papers, business supplies, and personal possessions. To address this, I organized objects into piles, assessed their importance, and discarded or moved irrelevant items while keeping essentials accessible. After cleaning my desktop, arranging the remaining objects became difficult, given the restricted space. To improve accessibility and efficiency, I used trays and organizers to put items together, maximize available space, and facilitate easy access.
The third step is shine, which means clean. Ensuring cleanliness on my workstation is difficult, especially in hard-to-reach spots. However, regular cleaning routines and disinfectant sprays, paired with microfiber cloths, help avoid dust accumulation, resulting in a clean workplace that is favorable to productivity. The next phase is standardizing and establishing working standards to ensure long-term success. Keeping an organized desktop demands discipline and persistence. To keep things organized, I make it a routine to clear up my desk, return objects, and minimize clutter every day. Lastly, sustaining progress, especially discipline, was difficult. Mindfulness and responsibility were developed to address this, including reminders of neat workstations, seeking support from coworkers, and visual reminders.

Second Post:
After reviewing the course textbook regarding the 5-S discipline. I decided to perform a practical 5-S at home with my coffee table that I have utilized for several years to complete school work and oftentimes work outside of the office. Keep in mind that the 5-S discipline consists of sequential levels, sort, set in order, shine, standardize, and sustain. To ensure proper discipline application the five levels involve moving through three correlating stages, improving the current situation, making it a habit, and becoming “World Class” (Emmett, 2005). Right off the bat, the first obstacle that I had to work through was level one, sorting. Over the past few years, I have obtained a lot of paperwork that I had saved thinking that one day it would be useful. After sorting through my paperwork, I realized that most of what I was saving was outdated and no longer useful. I also had an assortment of work stuff, drawings from my kids, and an empty Nintendo Switch box. After sorting through my junk, the practical application of the other levels and stages became easier to accomplish. I was able to set and standardize my area in a specific order for school and work. I also removed anything that didn’t contribute to the productivity in my workspace. This made it easier for me to clean on the spot and to sustain organization in my area for the future. Obviously, this was just a small-scale practical application of the 5-S discipline but, I was able to improve my current at-home work situation and make things simpler to become a routine habit. I wouldn’t say that all that was accomplished would classify as ‘World Class”. However, I can see where this stage can be applied to bigger organizations to move organizations from being reactive and remedial to becoming proactive and preventive at all five levels (Emmett, 2005).
