From a cultural anthropological perspective, I would be interested to research: One topic that I would like to research and discuss is the Transnistria flag; even though they broke away from Russia in 1991 they are still the only country that portrays the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R.) hammer and sickle on its flag (Vostok, 2020). Also, the country is not in any way a socialist country with what the U.S.S.R. was, and the hammer and sickle was known for symbolizing (Vostok, 2020). Classmate 2. As a cultural anthropologist I think I would research the country’s actions and behaviors through cultural relativism. I think to most people of any other country, they would’ve have migrated years ago after their country had been fighting the same issues for 30 years. At the same time, I’m sure there are some people are very proud that they come from Transnistria and are worried about the future state of their county and as stated in the video, their identity; but moving to another country doesn’t equate to giving up your culture or identity. We see it all the time in the US with Little Italy’s and Chinatowns, and I’ve seen it here in Germany with huge Turkish, African, Indian and other cultures. Cultural relativism would give a better understanding as to why the people of this country are so optimistic and hopeful when their country is still in turmoil after all these years.
