Research Question:
How have Peru’s language policies since the turn of the 21st century influenced the preservation and revitalization of indigenous languages, and what impact do these policies have on the cultural rights and heritage of indigenous communities?
Thesis Statement:
Peru’s language policies implemented since the 21st century have played a pivotal role in the preservation and revitalization of indigenous languages, fostering a greater sense of identity and cultural rights among indigenous communities, despite facing challenges in implementation and widespread adoption.
In simple terms, Peru’s efforts to protect and revive indigenous languages since the 2000s are showing promising results in helping indigenous communities reclaim their linguistic heritage and cultural rights. However, to truly succeed, these efforts need to overcome various obstacles and continue evolving to meet the communities’ needs
Effective language policies are important
for the preservation of indigenous languages in Peru, which is significant when
it comes to protecting indigenous communities’ rights and their heritage.
Despite legislative advancements, such as the 2011 Indigenous Language Act,
challenges in implementation and the need for comprehensives support mechanisms
have hindered the full realization of their policies’ potential. Despite Peru’s
efforts to recognize these languages legally, there is still a big difference
between what the law says and what actually happens. This thesis will look into
why these policies aren’t working as well as they should and how to make them
better. It will also compare Peru’s situation with other places in Latin
America.
