Background on Research Topic
Topic Area: Occupational Health and Safety in Construction
Focus: Migrant construction workforce protection in the GCC.
Questions on the Focus: Is the workforce being mainly based on migrant workers impacting GCC countries’ in reaching high standards of health and safety? Is that why there is a lack of safety measures to protect these migrant workforce, in comparison to more developed countries that have more successful implementation of health and safety systems and protection. How can construction health and safety be improved upon? How can we shift towards equitable safety?

“Improving Health and Safety for Migrant Construction Workers in the GCC: A Comparative Analysis of Systems and Strategies”
Proposed Research Plan (subject to change):
Identifying Disparities: between health and safety systems between GCC countries and more developed nations, and how these differences impact migrant construction workers (regulations, enforcement mechanisms and cultural factors).
Analysing Impacts: Investigate the challenges faced by migrant construction workers in the GCC. Use case studies such as Qatar World Cup 2022 and Dubai Expo 2020.
Evaluating compliance with health and safety regulations between GCC countries (concerning treatment of migrant workers) and more developed countries.
