Introduction
Hook: (reword or pose stronger hook)
More than 80 percent of college students say loss of sleep
negatively affects their academic performance according to a National
Institutes of Health report.
Context: (expand on context)
There is a commonality of sleep deprivation among college
students. These students experience sleepiness and “brain fog” throughout the
day, which indirectly affects their academic performance.
Thesis:
The lack of sleep is detrimental to the academic performance
of students. Sleep deprivation directly impacts an individual’s natural sleep
cycle and thereby affects their capacity for concentration and remembrance. It
also causes irritability and decline in emotional and physical well-being.
Body
I.   The students who are sleep deprived have
disruptive sleep schedules that limit the adequate amount of sleep they are supposed
to get for effective output.
II.
Disruptive sleep cycles lead to negative consequences for the body’s ability to
function properly and effectively.
III.
Although the consequences of sleep deprivation for college students are
evident, there are solutions to this ubiquitous problem (ie. better habits and time management)
IV. Counterargument + Response
Conclusion: (expand on conclusion)
Sleep deprivation is a very prevalent problem among college
students. It leads to a disruption in the natural sleep cycle. This affects a
student’s ability to focus and retain memory, which may lead to a decline in
academic performance. However, through better sleeping habits and time
management, college students can find more time for sleep and be able to
perform academically at their best.
