Research Paper (about 1500 words) (25%): Each student will also be responsible for submitting a 5-6-page final paper (20 points).
Final Paper Topic: Asian American Foodways
The goal for this final paper assignment is to have students reflect on the broad diversity of histories and experiences within the Asian American community and Asian American foodways. Your research paper should center the study of foodways and culinary practices to the experiences of Asian Americans and the topics we have discussed in class.
Topic:
Food and empire (Pad Thai, Spam, Pineapple, etc.)
The assignment requires the following tasks:
Research Proposal: 1-2-page proposal describing what your topic will be about? What is your research question? Which Asian American group(s) you will write about? Explain what your topic is? What is your research question or statement of the problem? Why is this important? What are you adding to the conversation? Why should people care (the so what)? What is your position or argument? Explain what scholarly sources you will be using in your paper, which sources will be the most important and what exactly seems useful about those sources? Include information about who the author(s) are and what is their position. Evaluate the evidence they provide to support their argument and claims.
First Draft (500 – 800 words): Must cite at least 5 sources (these may be class readings or outside articles).
First Draft Peer Review conducted with two assigned writing partners
Final Paper (1,500 words): Must include a Works Cited page with at least 5 sources, and be properly formatted accordance with APA/MLA/Chicago style guidelines.
