The research assignment for this class is a research project where you will answer the following questions regarding electrolytes that occur naturally in our body, the effects of deficiencies and excesses of electrolytes, and advantages/disadvantages of sports drinks. You are to answer all questions (see below) completely to receive full credit.
Questions for the paper:
Makes up content grade. The number at end of each question indicates point value.
1. In general, describe the role of electrolytes in the human body. (3)
2. Discuss the purpose for at least five different electrolytes in the body (ie: what purpose potassium serves in the body). (10)
3. Discuss how electrolytes form in our body and/or how we get electrolytes in to our body. (4)
4. What happens if we don’t have sufficient amounts of electrolytes in our body? Don’t just tell me it won’t function correctly—give at least four different electrolyte deficiencies and how they affect the body (ie: what hyponatremia does to the body). (8)
5. What happens if we have too much of a certain electrolyte in our body? Give at least two different electrolyte excesses and how they affect the body (ie: what hypermagnesia does to the body). (4)
6. Discuss how sport drinks such as Gatorade or Powerade work in our bodies. (3)
7. Discuss at least two advantages and two disadvantages of these types of beverages.

Requirements: The paper must be at least 3 content pages in length (content pages do not include title and references pages). At least 3 references are required. Scoring is based upon demonstrated knowledge of the topic (content), organization, mechanics (grammar, spelling, & punctuation), references and proper use of APA formatting (refer to rubric for complete grading standards).
Papers that are written after rough drafts have been made generally score higher with their final draft. Computers and internet access are available in the Learning Resource Center (SSC) during college business hours.
The SSC provides access to numerous databases and it is highly recommended for your use when researching material
