Using one of the three prompts below, locate a broad subject that stirs your curiosity and then narrow down your topic by generating a researchable question. For example, after reading Shirley Jackson’s “The Tooth” you might be interested in learning more about dentistry. Your research might eventually lead you to the question “Should public water be fluoridated?” Ultimately, your paper’s thesis statement will answer your research question. Choose one of the following options: Research and write a paper on any subject related to the uncanny: humanoid robots, doppelgängers, superstition, synchronicity, ghosts, etc. Locate a “hidden” subject in any of our assigned texts. For example, Kelly Link’s “Stone Animals” might suggest a paper on child psychology in the aftermath of divorce or the history of taxidermy. Shirley Jackson’s “The Tooth” might suggest a paper on amnesia or public transport bus service in the U.S. You may also choose to write a researched literary analysis in which you analyze a specific element or device found in one of our assigned texts. Your essay must cite a minimum of five secondary sources, two of which must be academic/scholarly. Remember that when you use secondary sources in an essay, you must appropriately acknowledge the works you quote or paraphrase. Employ proper MLA citation for in-text references and in your Works Cited page. Use MLA formatting, 12 pt. Times New Roman, and 1-inch margins throughout. A failure to format your essay according to these guidelines will result in a half-letter grade deduction.
