Title: Plessy v. Ferguson and the Legacy of Jim Crow: The struggles of equality.
Introduction
This research project will investigate Plessy v. Ferguson and the Legacy of Jim Crow, a historical Supreme Court case that has had a profound impact on African American rights and equality struggles in America. This study will looks at how Plessy’s legal precedent informed segregation policies enacted under Jim Crow laws to understand the systematic obstructions faced by African Americans towards achieving full citizenship and civil rights. Furthermore, it aims at considering any protests or acts by colored people themselves or their groups against wrongs perpetrated through Plessy and Jim Crow, focusing on their role in the wider racial justice movement. Finally, this research will give an insight into black history which can be very relevant to social justice issues today as well as problems of equity
Research Questions:
What were the circumstances surrounding the Plessy v. Ferguson case and what were the legal consequences for African American rights in the United States?
How did the phrase “separate but equal” created by Plessy v. Ferguson help to institutionalize segregation and discrimination under Jim Crow laws?
What actions did African Americans take to combat segregation after the Plessy v. Ferguson verdict even though there were Jim Crow laws?
What were some of the political motivations behind this court’s decision that made them come into a conclusion like that and what were racial attitudes like at that time?
