Requirements & Things to Remember: -Header and heading in MLA format -This paper

May 4, 2024

Requirements & Things to Remember:
-Header and heading in MLA format
-This paper must be within 4-6 pages in length but at least FOUR FULL PAGES long. For each body paragraph, I suggest having a minimum of TWO (2) pieces of evidence from the film in order to give you enough to write about and meet the page requirement.
-This paper does will NOT require any outside sources (articles, video, research, etc). However, you can and are encourage to use one if you’d like, but the purpose of this source should be that it will help enrich your analysis/argument in at least one body paragraph. You will introduce the source with a signal phrase, quote from it, cite it, and then analyze it/explain how it connects to your overall argument in the paragraph.
-You must have a clear, assertive thesis statement that clearly addresses an argument about the text directly and explains how you will prove this argument in the paper. Do not use “I” (1st person) and do not announce (“In this paper, I will…”)
-You must have clear, assertive topic sentences at the beginning of each body paragraph that address specific aspects of the thesis and the text and outlines what you will argue/focus on in your body paragraph.
-Avoid too much summary. Only offer brief snippets of summary (a phrase/no more than a sentence) for context when introducing your evidence (i.e. the scene you will be analyzing).
-Remember that you should offer 10-20% evidence in a paragraph and that 80-90% of the paragraph should be your analysis and explanation.
-Be sure to cite your quotations, descriptions, and paraphrases from the text correctly. Here are two examples of citing evidence (1 is dialogue; 2 is paraphrasing a scene; both count as evidence that is cited):
1. Peg tells Edward “Blending is the secret” (Edward Scissorhands 00:28:23).
2. During the scene where Edward is being interviewed on television, he stares into the camera after being asked if he has a girlfriend, and it is as if he is staring into Kim’s eyes (Edward Scissorhands 00:56:27).
-Offer a title that is unique and original to your ideas and how they relate to the text.
Essay Prompts:
Conformity
What is the film’s message about conformity? What are examples of how the neighborhood conforms, and what is the director’s message about this? How does Edward either conform or not conform throughout the film? What are the different ways he is accepted by the rest of the neighborhood, and what are the consequences of this?
The “Other”:
How is Edward depicted as a monster in this film? Physically? Emotionally? Morally? Does Edward ever see himself as a monster or outcast? Why or why not? Who might be the real monster(s) in the film? Why and how is this conveyed?
Individuality & Isolation:
Edward drifts between isolation and acceptance during the film. What are the different ways that his individuality, as it is depicted in the film, either contribute to his isolation/loneliness or limit his ability to be “a part of”?
Suburbia and America:
What moral commentary is Burton making about suburbia and/or American ideals in this film? How is this seen through his depictions of the neighborhood/people in the town? What purpose does Edward serve in adding to that commentary or disrupting this “normalized” way of life?
Feel free to “mix and match” prompts. That is, if you decide to choose the prompt about conformity, you may find that your ideas overlap with the individuality and isolation prompt. This is TOTALLY OKAY, and I encourage you to do so. These prompts are not here to limit you, but to give you some ideas to spark your paper’s focus, so do not feel like you have to answer every single question provided in the prompt.
OR come up with your own prompt. Run it by me and we can discuss some ideas!
