Western High School serves a community that includes both low- and middle-income neighborhoods. Approximately 20% of the students at Western are African American, 5% are Asian, 30% are Latino, and 45% are White. The teacher staff at Western is 70% White, 20% Latino, and 10% African American, with a blend of beginning, mid-career, and late-career teachers. Lucinda Murphy, principal at Western, has decided to assess the school’s climate. She wants to include the teachers, staff, students, and parents in the assessment. Lucinda also wishes to use a variety of needs assessment methods in order to develop a full picture of the school’s climate and changes needed to improve the climate. What ways of assessing described in this chapter would you recommend that Lucinda use in the assessment? With which group(s) of stakeholders and for what specific purpose would you suggest that each selected method be used?
