Reply to this group discussion. response should be at least 200 words. Acknowledge and further extend on what the classmate is shared. Add new ideas fully supported by comm. research (ie scholarly sources) and ask open ended meaningful question to extend conversation. Book used is Interpersonal Skills in Organisation seventh edition by Suzanne C de Janasz, Kaen O. Dowd, Beth Z. Schneider.
My immediate reaction to this is: What a train wreck!
There are some obvious situations to point out here. There does not seem to be a clear overall goal. There are individual goals per-group, not as a whole. The groups seem to be closed off and do not seem to communicate together or group to group or all groups together. Though an overall team, they do not reflect this in their actions.
Organization. Organization in a team is important and each group should have a strong team leader, chosen in this case, due to all the chaos, an appointed team leader would be the best choice. Define ground rules for each group and as an overall team in order to keep a calm atmosphere, allowing for each group to present multiple ideas and bring these options to the table, as a team, to discuss each of these options per group, that is contributing for the teams overall goal.
Communication as this course is teaching, must be effective. There is only a win-win-win=WIN option here. Everyone should be working together towards the common goal. The goal here is each group to work together to create a new product. This company is part of the Fortune 500, which means it has risen above and beyond in quality/expectations with products and has made the top 500 companies to buy from or do business with. With this prestige, how is the companies development team in such shambles?
Listening to all the complaints from each department shows interpersonal/ social skills. It shows acknowledgment and awareness of issues that need to be fixed and allows the team to try and establish problem solving skills through framework or an agenda (de Jana, Dowdy, Schneider, 2021, P 186).
The use of a self-managed team with communication barriers may not be best suited for this task as there are multiple tasks besides the one the team has been given to address and it seems as though they have not shown they have had time to build transparency with each other. Taking the time to follow the five stages of team development, forming, storming, morning, performing, and adjourning (de Jana, Dowdy, Schneider, 2021, P 222)
The company should be made aware as soon as possible, if the team cannot come together and work through issues as the team when being put together should have been considered; employee and organizational history (de Jana, Dowdy, Schneider, 2021, P 227). There are problems as presented above such as, one part of the organization, is at odds with another part of the organization (so on) because communication is lacking. Making sure these problems are handled first delays time on the task to develop a new product but the complaints should not be dismissed and acknowledged before going through with new ideas. These problems do not seem to be a part of what the team should be focused on however as there is a time limit and this would interrupt the development process. This problem should be handles by the company itself through their own meeting on how to handle the problem and what steps to take fixing the errors in communication for these channels or these parts of the company.
Teams will have their share of disagreements and may also have to negotiate some ideas. Communication skills are extremely important to a team and having team members who know how to effectively do so. Having transparency, a common goal, motivation, openness and a willingness to learn and change thoughts and contribute thoughts, focus, respect, responsibility, reliability and overall willingness to participate while carrying a positive attitude will help the team advance through situations that arise and help
