RE: Discussion – Week 6
COLLAPSE
Social media has the potential to create collective action as evidenced by a study conducted in 2016 in which investigators studied a group of participants over a 6-week time period (Kende, van Zomeren, Ujhelyi, & Lantos, 2016 & Schumann & Klein, 2015). Prior research has identified that social media has the greatest chance of mobilizing/motivating people when it is interactive, socially affirmative, and is used for the sharing of information. Okdie et al. (2014) suggests that the accessibility and prevalence of media usage should be of interest to psychologists, noting that behavior and perception is influenced by tv, movies, social media, and newspapers. I believe that while technology may require an adjustment to a new research environment, technology offers social psychologists some vital advantages: anonymity, wider sampling capabilities, and a new way to observe people to name a few. Because our brains and body function fundamentally the same, foundational social psychology principles generally apply. The concept that people are influenced by their environment and others around them in addition to being goal directed is still applicable and relevant, we just shift the focus to what that looks like in a social media forum. Similarly, social psychologists are interested in how social situations influence self-construal and perception. Investigators will focus attention on how media contributes to the development of self and culture.
Charitable Organization
In an effort to influence followers/viewers to participate in helping the cause I would first advise that media should appeal to viewer’s emotions, such as personal stories and self-affirming content (Kende, van Zomeren, Ujhelyi, & Lantos, 2016). Appeal to the emotions of followers considering a variety of perceptions, needs, and logical perspectives – for example, you would want content that is more focused around group benefit for collectivist leaning groups, while offering a greater emphasis on individuality, uniqueness, and individual superiority for more individualistic leaning followers. Second, I would emphasize the importance of fidelity. Fidelity is the degree to which information is accurate and complete, meaning the more information that’s provided, the clearer the picture is and people tend to believe (Okdie et al., 2014). Content should be thorough and well supported. Third, I would encourage the organization to have staff assigned to media management, people who are responsible for managing any chat forums, providing additional information and validation to users. Shumann and Klein (2015) explain that group anonymity in coordination with validation and encouragement encourage a greater sense of belonging to the group. They additionally reports that group enhancing efforts like user engagement increases the influence of social norms and improves group identification, and will be more motivated to further the group’s efforts (Shumann & Klein, 2015).
