Emerging technologies such as consumer, mobile and telehealth technologies have had a great impact in the delivery of care. For instance, the emergence of technology has resulted into better and more accessible treatment. With technology, patients can now access healthcare services as easily as possible from the comfort of their homes. They can have a doctor’s consultation through video conferencing, making these services easily accessible and at a more faster rate without the need to travel to other locations.
The use of technology has also made patient care safer and more reliable in most applications. Nurses and doctors can record real time patient information through a laptop or a tablet and share it instantly to a multidisciplinary team, making patient care safer.
Softwares have also improved healthcare and disease control where diseases can be easily classified according to their causes and symptoms and then stored into massive databases encompassing a variety of individual codes. This resource allows medical professionals and researchers to track, retrieve and utilize valuable data in the fight to control disease and provide better healthcare outcomes in general.
One of the ethical issues related to electronic health records that can impact nursing practice is privacy and confidentiality. These records may be accessed by unauthorized individuals which may breach the privacy and confidentiality of the patient. This may cause a significant impact in nursing practice and may even make a nurse lose their practicing license.
One method which I can implement in my practice to protect the patient’s privacy and confidentiality is by conducting a security risk assessment and ensuring that all the electronic gadgets containing patient details are secured with a strong password to prevent unauthorized access. This ensures that the documents are safe and well protected. The nurse can also ensure that all the information regarding patient details are end to end encrypted before being shared to avoid access by unauthorized access.
