THIS IS THE DISCUSSION QUESTION – Imagine the following scenario: You are taking the evidence-based practice course and one of your classmates shares an EBP project draft with you. You notice that some of the research has not been cited correctly or even at all. When you approach your classmate, the response is that “no one will notice, and it is not a big deal anyway.” What are your next steps in speaking with your classmate? Consider how this could reflect on the credibility and integrity of the individuals involved, the university, and the profession.
MY CLASSMATE RESPONSE -Students must maintain academic integrity values to ensure the transition to professional, safe, and ethical practice (Miron et al., 2022). In this situation, I would remind my classmate that plagiarism could affect their future and the individuals involved. Plagiarism also reflects poorly on the university and profession. In a non-accusatory tone, I would explain why plagiarism is wrong and the potential consequences they could face. If the student accepts, I will also offer my assistance with help to correctly cite the research. Trying to create positive reinforcement with direct communication, I would also reiterate how hard this student has worked to get to this point in their academics and that risking losing it all over plagiarism is not worth it.
