Self-Reflections on Nursing Theories
Upon my reflection on the nursing theories that I deem most relevant to my work, multiple essential frameworks emerge. Hildegard Peplau’s Interpersonal Relations Theory is, in my opinion, was one of the most influential theories. My approach to nursing practice and Peplau’s emphasis on the therapeutic link between the nurse and patient are very similar. I think that to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care, it is essential to establish a relationship of trust and support with patients. My goal is to enable patients to take an active role in their own care and decision-making by promoting open communication, empathy, and respect for one another.
Madeleine Leininger’s philosophy of Cultural Care Diversity and Universality is another nursing philosophy that I believe to be quite pertinent. I realize how important it is to comprehend and respect patients’ cultural ideas, attitudes, and traditions as a nurse working in a diverse healthcare setting. Leininger’s approach emphasizes the requirement of providing care that is sensitive to each patient’s unique cultural context and competent in their own culture. My goal is to provide inclusive and equitable care to all patients by embracing cultural diversity and customizing care to fit the specific requirements of patients from all cultural backgrounds.
Furthermore, the Theory of Human Caring by Jean Watson has had a significant impact on my nursing work. Watson promotes a holistic approach to treatment that takes into account the needs of the mind, body, and spirit and highlights the significance of compassion as the cornerstone of nursing. I work to cultivate presence, compassion, and therapeutic touch in my contacts with patients to incorporate Watson’s concepts of caring into my practice. My goal is to support patients and their families on their journey toward healing by fostering a compassionate and healing atmosphere.
In addition, Patricia Benner’s Novice to Expert Theory has influenced how I view nursing practice as an ongoing process of growth and learning. Benner’s philosophy places a strong emphasis on the value of experiential learning and real-world information acquired via practical application. I am conscious of the need to continuously broaden my knowledge and abilities to give patients the best care possible as I develop as a nurse.
