Remembering Fairy Tales
Instructions: Consider the content and writing style used in the parody “The Dragon and the Dry Goods Princess” (see attached). Use a new word processing document to provide your responses.
What conventions and icons of the fairy tale genre are used in this story? List them and explain how they are typical of fairy tales, using specific examples. /5
What clues did you notice that told you this is not a traditional fairy tale? List these and explain in detail why they wouldn’t fit in a typical fairy tale. /5
How are the fairy tale conventions used differently than in traditional fairy tales? What is the effect of this difference? Explain. (If you’re not used to questions about effect, know that you can think of effect as the effect on the story or on you as a reader.) /5
How do you imagine the author feels about fairy tales? What makes you think that? /3
Examining Voice Through Character
This assignment will focus on exploring the use of narrative voice in your chosen novel. It will be submitted to your teacher for evaluation.
Note: Remember to number and name each of your assignments and save them regularly to your computer as you work.
Provide your responses to the following prompts. Be as detailed as possible.
Choose one character from your novel, other than the narrator, that you feel has an interesting side to the story that should be revealed. Write a paragraph or so about the following:
What details they are aware of
How their perspective is interesting
Now choose a particular episode or incident that you have read so far in your novel that involves the character you have chosen above. What is that particular episode? Describe in detail what happens.
Now retell the same episode from your chosen character’s perspective. You will write a draft of a first-person narrative, in which your chosen character tells the story of the episode you just wrote about. Try to keep the voice consistent with the voice that is revealed in the novel, and make the narrative as whole and credible, interesting, and consistent as possible.
Consider the following while writing. Include these considerations in your writing:
The character’s voice as revealed in the dialogue of the novel
The possible thoughts, feelings, and conflicts of the character at this point in the story
The possible motivations of this character. Consider the reliability of the original narrator and whether your new narrator (your chosen character) will be more or less reliable and why.
The various sensory perceptions of the character at this point in the story. What does your character see, hear, smell, taste, or touch during this incident?
Any other associations—images, other texts, people, memories, etc. that would come to the mind of the character in this situation.
Creative Narrative
Instructions: Open a new word processing document and create your response following the guidelines provided below. Be as detailed as possible.
Using one of the three epigraph quotes you chose, create a short narrative piece (about 2 pages, size 12 font, double-spaced) based on a specific character’s voice from the novel you’re reading. You have a couple options here. You can further refine the narrative from your previous assignment, “Examining Voice Through Character,” or you can start fresh, if you want to. Either way, take note of the criteria below.
Use the epigraph as the theme for your narrative.
Create your first draft, developing the theme. Include your entire first draft.
Have your work reviewed and then revise and edit it based on the feedback. Include notes on the feedback your reviewer gave you. I would like to see fairly major revisions that show you have thought deeply about your writing.
Use all of the various devices covered in this learning experience (metaphor, symbol, and allusion) to bring this alternate character’s voice to life and express the complexity of his or her character while still remaining true to the original portrayal in the novel.
Be sure to use at least one metaphor, one symbol, and one allusion in your piece (and note where they are in parentheses.)
In notes at the end of your work, include your intended meaning for each of the literary devices.
Make final edits to your work.
Understanding Approaches to Visual Art
This is a review in which you will explore your understanding of some of the rules of composing photographs. This assignment will be handed in to your teacher for evaluation.
Choose one of National Geographic images and answer the following questions. Please include the image in your document:
What is the image that you picked? Describe what you see in the image referring to three of the 5P’s from “Approaches to Visual Art” (posture, point of view, position, proportion, props). /3
Choose three of the following rules and discuss how you believe your chosen image follows or ignores these principles: rule of thirds, balance, leading line, symmetry and patterns, viewpoint, background, depth, or framing. (See this pdf from the course content) /3
What are you most drawn to in this image? Why do you think this is something you are interested in? /1
What are four questions that your chosen photograph makes you ask? /1
Picture Book
Submit your Picture Book as an attachment in this assignment.
Make sure that you have proofread all print text carefully against the original poem to ensure that there are no inadvertent changes in spelling, language use, and capitalization and punctuation.
Remember: When using the texts of others, it is important to be accurate in your reproductions. In poetry, it is also important to maintain the line breaks of the original, so also check that the line breaks remain the same. If you do change such formatting, be sure to include your reasons why in your reflection.
Once all of your print text is proofread and accurate, check to ensure that the illustrations are placed where you wish them to be, and that the overall effect of your picture book is satisfactory.
Note: You can find illustrations on the internet instead of drawing them, if you would prefer that.
Second note: Don’t forget to include a reflection on your use of visual techniques in which you will explain various choices you made and your thoughts on adapting a poem to the picture book form.
These are the 5 assignments keep it nice and simple don’t need to try to hard on it just follow the steps and you’ll be fine
Doesn’t have to be long just do what the questions ask, thank you :))
