Disaster Scenario
March 22nd, 2024
would be remembered as a day of pain, loss and mass devastation for residents
of Rolling Park Mississippi when to date the deadliest tornado ripped through
the county of Harrison. It left 165 people injured and 17 dead. Winds were
recorded at 195 miles per hour lasting a devasting 71 minutes in this small
town of approximately 2000 people as was reported by the new media broadcast.
Members of the community and neighboring communities were left searching
through the ruble for any sign of missing persons. Emergency personnel
responding and aiding with extracting and treating persons with injuries
ranging from scrapes, loss of limbs, collapsed lung to lifeless bodies stuck
beneath overturned mobile homes or vehicles.
MSN
Nurse involvement
Disaster
preparedness is an essential aspect of healthcare that the advanced practice
nurse must consider. In natural disasters or emergencies, the nurse must be
equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide effective patient
care. This involves a thorough understanding of disaster management protocols
and the ability to assess, diagnose, and treat patients in high-pressure
situations. Additionally, the nurse should be able to collaborate with other
healthcare professionals and emergency responders to ensure the best possible
outcomes for patients. By being well-prepared and trained, the advanced
practice nurse can be a valuable asset in times of crisis. The advanced practice
nurse has advanced assessment and clinical skills to adequately care for
patients during or after a disaster.
Priority
Competencies
The advanced
practice nurse has the experience in utilizing evidence-based practice when
adapting to the role that fits the patient’s situation. Being able to assume
the role of leadership with appropriate task delegation and advance clinical
skills are two competencies that would be useful when dealing with disaster
management processes.
