Read this short excerpt of Ida B. Wells’s Southern Horrors titled The Malicious and Untruthful White Press. Wells was an activists and researcher who wrote extensively about lynching in the post-Civil War American South. Wells was a black woman living in the post-Civil War South. When her friend was lynched, Wells resolved to research lynching cases. In Southern Horrors, Wells meticulously documented numerous cases of lynching, explored the motivations behind these acts, and exposed the systemic racism and white supremacist ideologies that fueled them. She also criticized the complicity of the legal system and media in perpetuating these atrocities and advocated for the necessity of social and legal reform to protect the rights and lives of Black Americans.
