CASE SCENARIO: Using Research in Practice
Sophie is a 6-year-old student who was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). She is high functioning and is in an all-day kindergarten class; she has some difficulty in social interactions but has very strong reading skills. It has taken her a couple of months to adjust to the routine at school, but now she loves the routine so much that she plays school at home, even on holidays and weekends. Sophie gets upset whenever her school routine deviates from what she has come to expect, such as when there are school assemblies, early-release days, or other changes in her routine. Also, Sophie occasionally becomes overstimulated and has difficulty calming herself down. She may scream, kick, hit, and destroy objects for up to 30 minutes. The school district has provided an individual paraeducator so that Sophie can remain in her kindergarten class.
Sophie’s teacher and parents would like to send her to first grade for reading instruction but are concerned because of her difficulties adapting to new situations. They are worried that she will throw a tantrum and not be able to remain in the reading class and that this may derail her successes in school.
Questions to be answered in paper
Who are the people in the school and in the community who might be involved in coming up with an intervention plan to help Sophie adjust to this change? Briefly explain why each person might be involved.
How might you use data and research to inform an intervention plan to help Sophie adjust? (This would be a good place for some citations).
What theory or theories might you apply to this situation? Explain your answer.
What are some equity and inclusion issues you might encounter from other students and from school personnel? How would you address these issues in a professional and ethical manner?
What policies should you be familiar with to ensure that your plan is legally sound? Give a brief explanation of why each policy you choose applies to this situation.
Use APA 7th edition formatting for this assignment, including a title page and in-text citations that match with a reference list. Undergraduate papers should be 3-4 pages in length, and include at least one scholarly citation (not including your textbook). Graduate papers should be 5-6 pages in length, and include at least 3 citations (not including your textbook). Please use headings and subheadings in your paper! This helps your professor when grading, and is good APA practice.
