The Preamble to the Constitution reads, “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” You can see that the Preamble designates six goals for the federal government:
form a more perfect union
establish justice
insure domestic tranquility
provide for the common defense
promote the general welfare
secure the blessings of liberty
Compose an essay, according to the paper requirements, arguing in favor of the goal that has been most advanced by American government and society since the ratification of the Constitution.
Your essay will need to contain several components divided throughout several paragraphs:
-First, you need to make a claim. That claim needs to state which of the goals outlined in the Preamble you believe has been most advanced by American government and society. This is your thesis and should appear at the end of your first paragraph.
-Next, you need to use the content from this course to show how that goal has been advanced. For example, if you believe “establishing justice” has been most advanced, you could look at the judicial system that has been created by the Constitution and Congress. You will need to supply several topics, ideas, terms, concepts, etc. that are discussed throughout this course – supplying at least one paragraph for each example. Many of these topics, ideas, terms and concepts appear in bold in your textbook, but you are encouraged to use others that are not in bold, or that appear in the PowerPoint lectures or Course Packet.
-Finally, you will need to supply evidence that proves your claim. For instance, if you believe that the government has done best at “securing the common defense,” you could look at Congress’s power to raise a military, and then provide statistics about the size of the American military. Each piece of evidence should be given its own paragraph.
You will need to connect topics, ideas, terms, and concepts covered in this course to modern day evidence that supports your claim.
When providing examples from the course, take the time to define each topic and explain why it is important to the function or organization of American government.
When citing modern evidence, be sure to be specific. Provide evidence that clearly shows how some feature of American government and politics has advanced the goal you have selected from the Preamble. Provide several pieces of evidence to support your claim.
