Read the paragraph below and then write a response to the questions.
He liked the girls that were walking along on the other side of the street. He liked the look of them much better than the French or German girls. But the world they were in was not the world he was in. He would like to have one of them. But it was not worth it. They were such a nice pattern. He liked the pattern. It was exciting. But he would not go through all the talking. He did not want one badly enough. He liked to look at them all, though. It was not worth it. Not now when things were going good again (72).
Analyze the passage. Why do you think Krebs doesn’t want to talk? What does he mean when he says “It was not worth it?” Why do you think he focuses on the pattern of the girls’ dresses? Notice how many sentences begin with “He” or “It.” What does the repetition in the sentences suggest about Krebs?
Now choose another passage with multiple sentences from the story. Working closely with the passage you chose, respond to the following: How does Hemingway use language to communicate trauma?
As you write, engage closely with the specific vocabulary and structure of the sentences. Remember to prepare your imaginary reader by summarizing aspects of the plot, characters and setting.
