The writing assignments in this course are considered formal writing – this means I expect you to do all of the following: write with purpose. Each sentence should contribute to your overall writing. Additionally, you should use the same glossary of terms that the readings’ authors use; do not make up your own descriptors or tell the reader, “Basically…” Your tone should be literal and formal, using proper English spelling and grammar. Do not use clichés, text speak (e.g. ROFL), emoji, non-text characters, or non-scholarly sources. You should write in paragraphs which are organized to fit together.
All essays must use ASA formatting for in-text citations and reference lists and be free of spelling and grammatical errors. Your assignment should be typed, double-spaced, and in 12-point font. Each essay should be between 1000-1300 (4-6 pages) words in length, with one-inch margins on all sides and page numbers. Please do not vary your font, font size, spacing, or punctuation in an effort to overcome the length requirement, as this is readily apparent to your instructor.
Film Analysis
In 4-6 pages, write a paper analyzing a film of your choosing. The film needs to address sociological questions about the family (you may browse ahead for other chapters in the textbook). For this assignment, you will need to include the following components:
Provide a brief written summary/synopsis of the film.
Do you agree/disagree with “your” film? Apply as many theories as you need to support your arguments in a sociological context.
Is “your” film portraying the U.S. (or other countries) family (culture, beliefs, traditions, values, etc.)?
