During this course, you should have completed two books and one full-length film, all with the theme of personal development (self-help) and with the aim of helping readers/viewers to better their own lives. You will use all three of these sources in your final exam essay.
You may refer to these sources as direct support for your own thesis statement.
You may refer to these sources by using them as “Naysayers”.
You may agree or disagree – in part or in whole- with the advice, information, or ideas provided in these sources. The important thing is that you reference all 3 for support in your final exam essay.
Whether you use the three approved sources as direct support for your own thesis statement, or as relevant ideas that you want to prove ineffective, fallacious, or incorrect (which indirectly supports your thesis), you will refer to each of these sources at least ONCE, but a total of FIVE references are required. THIS MEANS THAT YOU WILL REFERENCE SOME SOURCES MORE THAN ONCE. There should be at least FIVE references to the approved sources- ONE REFERENCE IN EACH BODY PARAGRAPH. ( You may use one of your five references or in the Introduction as well. )

Support includes an explanation, details, and specific examples, plus text-based support in the form of a direct quote, summary, or paraphrase, and an explanation of the quote and how it relates to your topic sentence or your thesis statement. Use the quote sandwich format for all references.
Use TEXTUAL SUPPORT IN EVERY BODY PARAGRAPH ( unless using one of your references in the Introduction) by referring to each of the three approved sources used in class at least TWICE in the essay. (The three texts are: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, The Secret Film, and The Development Text chosen from The Approved List)
Remember to use the author’s whole name (first and last) and the title and type of text the first time you mention them and their work. After that, you can use their last name only or continue to use their full name. (Never refer to the author or by their first name only!)
Use the Quote Sandwich Format to include all references, including direct quotations, paraphrases, and summaries
Consistently give credit to the sources and the authors of those sources *.
Cite the sources appropriately in MLA format with parenthetical citations (name, page number)
Be no more or less than THREE FULL PAGES.
*When referring to the film The Secret, you can use the name of the specific person who said the words in the film, or you can use Rhonda Byrne’s name as the creator of the film.
RULES FOR THIS ESSAY:
Use only the three approved sources for this essay: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, The Secret Film, and The Personal Development text chosen from The Approved List provided at the start of the semester. Use ALL THREE SOURCES. Do not include references to other outside sources.

This essay should be written COMPLETELY in THIRD PERSON POINT OF VIEW. Do not use personal references or examples. Do not use the first person (“I”), or 2nd person (“you”), points of view AT ALL. Unless it is a direct quote, the words “I” and “You” should not be in your essay AT ALL. Use a third-person pronoun. (Example: Instead of writing ” You have probably heard of Rihanna”, say ” Most people who listen to modern American pop music have probably heard of Rihanna.”
You must use AT LEAST THREE (3) different Introduction Strategies. One of these should ALWAYS be providing background information. Remember that Intro Strategies help guide the reader into the Thesis Statement. Therefore, your Thesis Statement comes AT THE END of the Introduction.
You must use at least FIVE REFERENCES in this essay from the 3 approved sources. These can be direct quotations, summaries, or paraphrases. In this short essay, no direct quote should be more than 2 sentences long. Each body paragraph should contain at least one reference.( One of your references may be used as part of your Intro Strategy.)
All references to the sources ( this includes ANY instance in which you use words, ideas, examples, or stories that you did not conceive of completely on your own, including quotations, paraphrases, and summaries) must be properly credited using the Quote Sandwich Method and parenthetical citations and in proper MLA format.
Each Final Exam Essay must be uploaded through Turn It In using the Canvas assignment page. Do NOT include your name or J number on the final draft.
Your essay must be typed, double-spaced, and written in Calibri or Times New Roman 12 pt. font. Do not use any other font styles.
