Paper
The surprise attack of Hamas on Israel on October 7th,
2023 ignited tensions around our country between those who are pro-Israel and
those who are pro-Palestinian. Particularly, institutions of higher education
have been at the center of this controversial topic as students engage in
protests and heated discussions with one another and with college
administrators, and as administrators themselves have been criticized for their
response to the Israel-Hamas conflict.
One of the key issues at stake in this tension is the
state of Freedom of Speech. On March 27th, 2024, Governor of Texas, Greg Abbot,
ordered colleges and universities across the state to revise their free speech
policies, include a definition of antisemitism, and enforce punishment for
those who violate those policies, including expulsion.
Do some research about this topic and answer the
following questions:
1. How
can institutions of higher education balance their role as places of
intellectual debate and their responsibility to protect their students from
violence? Explain.
2. How
should colleges and universities respond to campus protests, rallies, and
demonstrations? Explain.
3. As
a college student yourself, how do you feel about the climate on Freedom of
Speech, amid the debate over pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian protests on college
campuses? Explain.
4. Do
you think colleges and universities should have designated free-speech zones in
their campuses to allow protesters and demonstrators to exercise their right to
freedom of speech? Or do you think the entire campus should be a free-speech
zone? Explain.
5. How
worried are you that free speech rights are going to be permanently curtailed
because of the fallout from the Israel-Hamas war? Explain.
Note: As you write your paper, keep in mind that public
colleges and universities are bound by the First Amendment, private
universities are not.
Use reliable sources and data to support your answers.
