Requirements:
For this assignment, you are required to explore a cultural group and/or social identity that is different from your own, and with which you do not have much knowledge of or experience with. You have two different options from which to do so:
Option 1 – In-depth Interview: The second option ask you to conduct an interview with and individual who identifies differently than you on one dimension of difference. Note, this individual does not need to represent a minority group or one that has experienced oppression. They do have to have membership in a cultural group or social identity group with which you do not identify and with which you have limited experience. It should be someone with whom you are comfortable having difficult conversations.

Option 2 – Cultural Event Observation: The first option asks you to attend 1 campus activity or community event hosted by or focusing on an identity group with which you do not personally identify. A great diversity of identity groups is represented at SU and in Central New York. However, research suggests that college students tend to interact most with students with similar racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and gender identities and sexual orientations. You are asked to attend this events and act as an ethnographer, taking extensive field notes about your observations and reactions.
