Purpose: The purpose of the community presentation is to apply ideas, literature, and knowledge gained in this course into a practical application of creating a presentation for a community group. This assignment directly aligns with the following course learning objectives:
– Demonstrate comprehension about the complexities of mass shooting events and the criminal justice response to those events.
– Identify different categories of offenders who commit mass shootings and the common characteristics those categories share.
– Explain the impact of mass shootings on victims, family members, and community members.
– Analyze the current academic literature surrounding mass shooting events in the United States and explain how the findings in the articles can be used by the criminal justice community.
– Prepare materials to participate in a community meeting to address fears about mass shootings.
Assignment Prompt: You are currently working for a criminal justice agency of your choice and there has been a mass shooting at a shopping mall in a community that is less than ten miles away from your current community. You have been asked to attend the community meeting and present on mass shootings in general, the threat to your current community, and how community members can be prepared.
Questions that must be answered:
– How do we know we are safe in our community?
– What has our local criminal justice agency done to prepare for this type of event?
– What should we tell our children to do if a mass shooting event takes place where they are?
Formatting Directions for a Handout
Length: Your handout will be one page, single sided and must include some sort of graphic element. You can see an example by clicking here: active shooter handout but your handout is not required to look exactly like this handout.
Paper Requirements (Part II of the required portion of this assignment):
– The paper will have bullet points that correspond to all the information you have included on your handout. This is the outline of what you will present to the community group, remember that these bullet points will need enough information to ensure you can provide a complete presentation.
– Your paper will also have the answers to the required questions in your document, even if they are not included on your handout.
– You will include a list of references for any data and statistics that you have included in your graphic. You will use APA 7th Edition formatting for these citations.
