Purpose: The concepts of this class should be useful to you in your everyday life. The goal of this assignment is to take an empirically-established concept and propose an intervention for a social problem you care about, as well as a way to determine if your intervention is effective.

Make sure that you are using correct attribution to avoid plagiarism. Cutting and pasting from an article without attribution constitutes plagiarism. Any direct quotes should be enclosed in quotation marks and credited in APA format using in-text citations. For example, “The use of candy provides an important means of motivation” (Wonka, 2019, p. 20). Direct quotes should be used sparsely (if at all), as the goal is to put research in your own words and convey it clearly. Research summaries in your own words also require proper APA in-text citation. Further guidelines on correct attribution and citations in APA format can be found at:

Your final paper should include the following components. Make sure to answer all questions in essay form (not using bullets or numbers).
In about a half page, describe what happened in the original research study IN YOUR OWN WORDS. If your paper includes multiple studies, answer these questions for one of the studies
Introduce the original study with a one-sentence overview, making sure to cite the original study in APA format. This will look like the citations above (Aronson & Mills, 1959). Note that you do NOT include author first names, article titles, or journal titles – just authors and year. For three or more authors, the format is (Smith et al., 2020), where Smith is the first author.
Who were the participants in the original study (college students, older adults, etc.)? If this information is not provided, note this.
What were the procedures in the original study (what did the researchers do)?
What were the results in the original study (what did the researchers find)?
In about a half page, describe your proposed intervention:
What is the real-world problem you are addressing?
How are you applying the concept from the original study to address this problem (“I plan to use framing to increase bike helmet use by . . .”)
In 2-3 pages, describe how you could determine if your intervention works. This requires manipulation of the intervention through random assignment and an appropriate control group.
Who are your participants (what are their demographics? How will they be recruited?)
What is your operationalized independent variable?
What is/are your operationalized dependent variable(s)?
What is the control condition?
What is the experimental condition (this should be your intervention)?
What is the proposed study procedure (what will happen to the participants in your study?) Provide enough detail that someone could actually run this study.
What will participants do (fill out a questionnaire, do a writing exercise, sing karaoke, etc.)?
How long will the study last?
Where will the study take place?
How will you ensure that your study is ethical?
What are your predicted results?
What are two strengths of your research design?
What are two weaknesses of your research design?
Why would these findings be interesting or important
