Purpose of this assignment. Imagine you are an HR director presenting about about an employment law situation or case in front of a panel of managers in a company to improve HR operations. You are briefing them on a case or an employment law situation that could come up in their workplace. You want them to understand what happened in this case, what the law is and how the law led to the results in the case and how to prevent similar situations in their own workplace. Don’t assume they know the law or how it applies to the types of situation you are discussing. It is your job to educate them through this PowerPoint. You are then to lead a discussion of this case or scenario and the relevant facts through Part 2, the discussion board. Make sure you give enough details on the facts, law, and background information so they understand how this case applies to their workplace and so the students can answer the questions posed.
Instructions – PowerPoint
What Cases Can You Use? Select a case or situation involving one or more of the employment law topics we have studied this semester. This should be a real life case or scenario and not just a concept or topic of law.
A good place to start to find your topic are the “clippings” boxes in the textbook that contain brief descriptions of cases or the “just the facts” boxes in the textbook that describe real life scenarios. You can also find cases through outside research or interesting cases you’ve heard about through the news. You do not have to use the “clippings” or the “just the facts” sections but these are good places to start. The purpose of the assignment is to research cases not fully discussed in the book to educate your fellow student about those cases.
Do not use
the longer case excerpts in the book
the case choces used for the case analysis or discussion questions
Once You Select A Case:
You will need to research relevant information, such as the facts and the result of the case or situation and the current laws that apply to the topic.
You need to discuss the outcome of the case (if you can find it) and how current laws apply to your case and the larger legal topic.
You will need to research how different companies are tackling this problem, discuss what these companies are doing and then analyze and explain what you think is the best solution and why.
Then write the PowerPoint as
Substantive Requirements for Your PowerPoint: The bolded and underlined sections below must be used as the headings of the slides.

Background/History – Describe the events/facts led to the case or scenario, what the result was, if you can find it, and provide a historical overview of the topic. Also describe the actual or possible resolution to the case/scenario.
Current Research/Law: Describe legal principles/law at issue and how those principles/law led to result in the case or relate to the case or scenario you chose. Make sure you explain how the law led to the result in the case and/or how the law would apply to lead to a resolution of the scenario.
Relation to Employment Law: Explain how this case or scenario is related to the larger topic of employment law. Please make sure to focus on the specific legal concepts we have studied in this class as related to the specific law/legal principles that are at issue in this your chosen case/scenario.
Suggestions to Prevent the Problem: Research best practices related to the larger problem at hand. Based on this research of what companies are doing to prevent the problem and any suggestions you have to prevent problems, describe best practices and potential policies or procedures an employer could have put in place to prevent the problem. Discuss whether the employer or employee should have done things differently to fix the problem or prevent the problem from happening in the first place. Make sure to research and include how different companies are resolving or preventing similar issues.
Impact on HR: Discuss how the overall issue/case/scenario and subsequent events would impact your role as a potential HR professional and/or the HR department. What policies, procedures and trainings would you put in place to prevent a similar problem from happening in the future? If you know what specific role you plan to hold in a HR department, feel free to include examples that relate to your role.
Discussion Questions for Students: At least two questions that lead to further discussion on the case, the legal concepts, or best practices that were discussed in the PowerPoint must be posed.
