For this final project, you’ll choose an aspect of dance history that interests you (time period, genre, etc.) and create a mini-timeline of events through the lens of one of the issues we discuss (racism, classism, gender, AIDS crisis, ableism, activism, etc.). The goal is to have an understanding of the linear timeline but to also be able to frame how one of these issues impacted and continues to influence the development or evolution of dance.
For example, you could choose to illustrate the development of jazz dancers and choreographers through the lens of the AIDS crisis and how the genre was impacted the during the late 80’s/early 90’s. Or perhaps you want to illustrate the entire history of ballet and how it was affected by gender roles. Maybe you’re interested in the history of dance used as protest and how Black Lives Matter activists have used dance as an expressive tool in the past ten years. This project is very open to interpretation and is a chance to research something that interests you, something that you want to know more about.
Choose the format , word document, 15 bullet points with short summary
Choose your overall concept, time period, dance genre
Choose what lens you’re focusing on (racism, classism, gender, AIDS crisis, ableism, activism, dance and social media, etc.)
Provide at least 15 events or pieces of information within your timeline as well any supporting information needed for context for each item
Be able to talk about your overall timeline and its significance
Cite your sources either in your document or on your visual creation- what websites, articles, sources did you use?
