The emphasis for this assignment is the evaluation of a system. For this assignment, you should use this definition of analysis as your guide:
1) The separating of any material or abstract entity into its constituent elements, as opposed to synthesis.

This assignment is not meant to be one in which you simply list the components of the EHR system you are analyzing. You should be able to look at a component and describe how the system you are analyzing either provides and supports that component, some portion of that component or even fails to provide it.
You will also need references or resources to substantiate any observations you make about how well the system works or how poorly it works. For example, if you indicate that a system does not efficiently link two parts of a program such as allergies and dietary orders, explain why that is important, and include a resource.
For this assignment, it is not acceptable to use the website of the EHR system you are analyzing as one of your sources. The aim is to use the experience you have had with the system, and to find reputable resources to back up your observations of the good or the bad characteristics of a system.
One final word, along with the experience you have with electronic health systems, you may have strong opinions about the EHR system. However, this is not intended to be an opinion paper. The expectation is that an analysis of the system is submitted for a grade.
Along that line, please refrain from writing your paper from a personal viewpoint. Points will be deducted. In other words, do not use the words I, my, I think, or I feel. This should be an OBJECTIVE analysis. Just as nursing observations are objective and documented as such…this assignment should be objective.

Using the modified evaluation tool provided below, you are to complete an analysis of an electronic health record (EHR) system. It can be either the system you are currently using or one you have used in the past. As you work through the evaluation tool, offer examples of how the system either meets the criteria you are addressing or does not.
An example (from way back in the day): the dietary component of the system did not communicate with the patient data system and any allergies or food aversions were not taken into consideration when meals were planned. In addition, there was no way to order a fresh ‘late’ meal for a patient who had been NPO overnight, had returned from a test, and was hungry!
Remember, do not use the name of the institution where you use (or used) the system or the name of the system program. You can create a ‘generic’ name for the system, such as EHR System1.
The resource includes 24 questions that address charting, prescriptions, lab and results management, health record management, and clinical messaging. Based on your experience with the system you are analyzing, you may not have experience to answer ALL of the questions.

Address as many of the standards on the modified tool in each section as possible. The purpose of the assignment is to help you look at a system as a ‘whole’ and objectively view it in order to determine if it meets the needs of a healthcare practice.

References are organized in alphabetical order by the last name of the first author of the reference.
Do not alter the order of the authors of an article. Do not attempt to alphabetize the names on an article. List the authors for an article in the exact order they appear.

While using the full evaluation tool on the HealthIt website is reasonable, there are many questions on the tool that you would not be able to answer at this point in your career. An example would be questions that are pertinent to only a healthcare provider, such as an NP, PA, or MD.
