The specialty area that I am pursuing is the FNP track. I have selected Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring model, as I feel this is the foundation to build on when providing care. This theory originated between 1975 and 1979 from Watson’s beliefs about nursing (Pajnkihar et al., 2017). Watson’s theory was also developed through her education, clinical experience, and social psychology while working towards her doctorate (Pajnkihar et al., 2017). Watson’s theory aimed to picture nursing as a separate body, a discipline to be separated from, but still connected to medicine Butts, 2017). The scope of Watson’s theory provides a framework for connecting sciences and humanities in order to achieve a caring connection between nurse and patient (Pajnkihar et al., 2017). Watson’s theory is logical and adequate for the nursing profession. The theory adequately explains carative processes in a logical manner (Rosillo et al., 2020). Watson’s theory is useful in all aspects of healthcare. In fact, many healthcare systems have embraced Watson’s theory as an addition to their professional practice models (Butts, 2017). Watson’s theory is simple, it highlights the importance of self-awareness in order to create trust and develop a human connection to promote better outcomes for both parties. Watson’s theory has good generalizability, as it can be applied to all areas of nursing practice (Pajnkihar et al., 2017). Watson’s theory is considered to be testable, as there are over 25 tools with established effectiveness and authenticity to determine empirically, how to measure Watson’s concepts (Pajnkihar et al., 2017). In my current setting as a hospice nurse, I apply Watson’s theory on a daily basis. An example of this is when I am meeting with a patient with a cancer diagnosis, who has decided that she does not want to pursue treatment, family members are upset and cannot understand why she would make this choice. I then validate the patient’s feelings and allow freedom of expression of those feelings. The patient then feels relieved and comfortable, and able to be confident in her decision to not pursue treatment. As a nurse, I also feel a sense of achievement for promoting the comfort of my patient. As a future nurse practitioner, my ultimate goals are to provide excellent care, promote health and wellness, and create a caring environment. By using Watson’s theory as the foundation for my practice, I can increase patient satisfaction, enhance the way I educate patients and families, and improve outcomes.
